Plants vs. Zombies – Plant Upgrades Overview

Plants vs Zombies Gatling Pea

One of the least known features in Plants vs. Zombies Free is plant upgrades. The reason for this is that upgrades are expensive and are optional. This means that you can complete the entire adventure mode without purchasing any of the plant upgrades. With that said, plant upgrades, for the most part, can make or break your game. The reason for this is that upgrades require a slot on your inventory and if you are not careful, it will take the slot intended for an essential seed.

Having said that, it is highly recommended that you purchase these upgrades by the time you are given enough slots to carry some extra seeds. With that out of the way, let’s take a quick overview of each of the available upgrades that you can purchase in the game. All of the upgrades below are available at Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies.

Gatling Pea – $5000

The Gatling Pea is an upgrade for the repeater that becomes available in Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies once you beat level 3-4 in Adventure mode. As mentioned before, this upgrade will cost you one slot in your active game inventory. Once planted on top of the repeater, your plant will have buffed projectile speed and up to 20 damage per shot. Aside from projectile speed and damage, one benefit that you can get with this upgrade is space. This is because having this plant is better than having two repeaters or a repeater and torchwood.

Twin Sunflower – $5000

The Twin Sunflower upgrades become available at Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies at the same time as the Gattling Pea. This upgrade also costs $5000 and $150 to plant on top of a regular sunflower. Like the Gattling Pea, having this upgrade will save you ample space and will double your sun production. This upgrade is useful for long levels that come with tough enemies. Due to its cost, it is important to shield this plant from Bungie Zombies with Umbrella Leaves.

Gloom-Shroom – $7500

The Gloom Shroom is a PVZ Free exclusive upgrade that becomes available at Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies between levels 4-4 and 4-5. This upgrade is planted on top of the Fume-Shroom and will cost 150 suns. Having this upgrade will allow you to inflict massive damage on all types of zombies. The downside of this upgrade is that it comes with a slow recharge rate and short-range. Nevertheless, having this upgrade in The Last Stand will provide you with an edge among your enemies.

Cat-Tail – $10000

The Cat Tail is a Lily Pad Upgrade that becomes available before levels 4-5. This upgrade will cost 225 suns and should be planted on top of the Lily Pad. Once in place, the Cat Tail will launch spike projectiles at the same rate as the repeater. Like the rest of the upgrades on this page, the Cat Tail can save you space in the pool, not to mention that this upgrade is highly effective against Balloon Zombies.

Winter Melon – $10000

The Winter Melon is an upgrade for the Melon-Pult that costs 200 suns. This lobbed plant upgrade has a 3×3 area of effect chilling every zombie within that range. This upgrade becomes available at Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies right after you complete the Adventure Mode. Having this upgrade will allow you to inflict 80 damage and 30 splash damage to all zombies. One thing that you should remember is that the chilling effect of this upgrade will be nullified by fire attacks.

Gold Magnet – $3000

The Gold Magnet is perhaps the cheapest upgrade that you can purchase in the game. This upgrade will set you back 20 suns and should be planted on top of the Magnet-Shroom. The Gold Magnet becomes available at Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies once you beat level 5-1. As for its function, this upgrade collects up to five coin pieces every five seconds allowing you to focus on your defensive and offensive strategy.

Spike Rock – $7500

The Spike Rock is an upgrade to the Spike Weed and becomes available at Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies after beating level 5-1. The Spike Rock costs 125 suns and will double the damage of a Spike Weed. Similar to the Spike Weed, the Spike Rock is immune to zombie damage. This upgrade can instantly eliminate Zombonis and Catapult zombies.

Cob Cannon – $20000

The Cob Cannon is the most expensive upgrade in the game setting you back $20000. This upgrade requires two Kernel-put placed side by side and will cost 500 suns in an active battle and will become available after clearing the Adventure Mode. For its purchase price, the Cob Cannon can inflict a massive amount of damage in a 3×3 area. The downside to this upgrade is the slow reload rate and vulnerability to zombie attacks. This expensive contraption is as powerful as a Cherry Bomb and will eliminate a Gargantuar in two hits.
